Draft Orem Bicycle and Pedestrian Recommendations Posted for Public Review and Comment!

Greetings,

Thank you for taking an interest in the future of bicycling and walking in Orem. We have had a very productive year so far with the project. Some of the highlights include:

  • In January we hosted our Public Charette which was attended by over 100 Orem residents. This was a follow up to our Online survey which produced almost 800 responses.
  • In April we hosted a design workshop at the UDOT office in Orem. Over 30 Orem, MAG and UDOT staff and engineers attended the all day seminar on proper design and construction of on-street bikeways and trails. This workshop was very well reviewed and all in attendance left with a better understanding of good bikeway design and a greater level of comfort with planning for the future.
  • Earlier this month in June, twelve delegates from Orem including five members of the Orem City Council travelled to Boulder Colorado to meet with Alta CEO Mia Birk and City of Boulder staff. Boulder is similar to Orem in many ways including climate, snowfall, and topography. Delegates were given two presentations about how Boulder has reached its current level of success and then taken out for a three hour bike ride around Boulder's excellent network of bike lanes and shared-use paths. Again, this event was well received and went a long way to increase the level of support for new bikeway and trail facilities within the City Council and Staff.

We are now ready to release our DRAFT recommended bicycle and pedestrian system for Orem. This network was heavily influenced by feedback provided at our first Charette and through the project website. The future buildout of the bicycle network in Orem has been separated into a Phase 1 network which will hopefully be completed within the next 5 years and a Vision Plan, which looks more long range and details how the network would grow to buildout. The Vision Plan is ambitious and will take many years and a considerable amount of funding to realize.

Please visit our DRAFT Recommendations Page to review the DRAFT recommended bicycle and pedestrian networks. You have to opportunity to vote for the facilities that you feel are most important. Your feedback will help us prioritize the network for implementation.

We have also posted the project working papers HERE. These working papers will eventually be combined into a larger planning document for the City.

Thanks for your continued interest, and don't forget to provide your valuable feedback!
